Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies kicked off it 2021 Advocacy Series with a webinar titled “Digital Platforms: Rethinking Business and Redefining Work” held last June 29 via Zoom and livestreamed via the official ILS Facebook page.

“In the domestic front, we know that there are pending bills in both houses that seek to address the issue of online or platform in a digital economy. I think you share with me the hope that congress could pass a law to finally settle the labor question of our time and in the process make digital or platform-based or gig work an instrument toward human dignity. I’m sure that our resource persons for this webinar can provide breakthrough insights on how dignity in platform-based work can be realized. I take pride in what you (ILS) are doing as researchers during this challenging yet exciting times,” states DOLE Assistant Secretary Alex Avila V. Avila in his Opening Message. 

Manila – Newly-promoted Institute for Labor Studies Planning Officer II Mr. Levie F. Mariano, Jr. took his Oath of Office online last May 11 as administered by ILS Executive Director Ahmma Charisma Lobrin-Satumba, and witnessed by his colleagues from the Institute via Zoom platform.

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) management, headed by Executive Director Ahmma Charisma Lobrin-Satumba, conducted a series of online Management Review via the Zoom platform last May 10, 17 and 25, 2021.

The discussion covered the following: 1.) Review of Quality Management System (QMS) structure; 3.) Changes in QMS Committee Membership; and 4.) Review of Processes for Enrolment in QMS; 5) Client Satisfaction Report; and 6.) QMS Performance.

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies commenced its annual iGov Talks series last May 11, via the online meeting platform Zoom, featuring ILS working papers on Social Protection.

The said activity was attended by representatives from the Department of Finance (DOF), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Social Security System (SSS), and League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP).

Manila – Acting Chief of the Employment Research Division, John Emmanuel Villanueva, presented his Master of Public Administration (MPA) thesis on political dynasties during the “Spatial Dimension of Sustainable Development” Session of the 13th World Congress of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI) held on 28 May 2021.

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies’ (ILS) Gender and Development (GAD) Committee and the Institute’s Mental Health Working Group have lined up month-long online activities for all its employees in celebration of the Mental Health Awareness Month this May.
GAD Chair Arianne Ishreen Bucar and MH Working Group lead Ronell Delerio proposed a series of activities to help raise awareness about mental health in the workplace and provide a platform for building a safe space (i.e. sense of psychological safety) where ILS staff can continue to thrive.

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies, in partnership with the DOLE Planning Service (PS) and the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE), led the Sectoral Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) for Workers: Informal Sector, Women, Youth, & Platform Workers via the Zoom platform last April 15.

The said FGD is a component of the more comprehensive Joint Task Group on Economic Recovery (TGER) and National Employment Recovery Strategy (NERS) 2021-2022 Task Force Job Summit, in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Labour Organization (ILO), and The World Bank (WB) and runs from April to May of 2021.

Manila – Researchers from the Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) presented their 2020 study on Telecommuting during a special meeting with the Technical Executive Committee composed of the Department of Labor and Employment’s tripartite partners representing labor and employment sectors last April 27 via Zoom.

The research titled, “Exploring Telecommuting as the New Normal Work Arrangement: A Rapid Assessment of Telecommuting Practices Prior and During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” was authored by Joyce Anne S. Lumactud, Supervising Labor and Employment Officer and Franchesca Rose S. Castillo, Labor and Employment Officer III from the Labor and Social Relations Research Division (LSRRD) of the ILS. The same paper was presented during the 2020 DOLE Research Conference last March 25.

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies actively involved in the conduct of a series of sectoral Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) for business and workers groups in time for the Job Summit jointly organized by the National Employment Recovery Strategy (NERS) Task Force and the Task Group on Economic Recovery (TGER) to mark the Labor Day Celebration for May 1.

Manila – The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) recently collaborated with the Department of Labor and Employment’s International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB) in the conduct of the 2021 Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) Planning Exercise.

The Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) were grouped according to geographical location. The three-part event started last April 13-14 for the Asia-Pacific region and continued last April 29-30 for the Europe and Americas regions. The event will be concluded on May 14-15 for POLOs in the Middle East and Africa region.
