Labor thinktank battles for Green Workplaces at Albay Eco-Challenge

Labor thinktank Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) battles head-to-head with other climate change adaptation teams nationwide in friendly competition at the 1st Albay Eco-Challenge on October 25.

The ILS team, with its Green Workplaces advocacy is composed of eight employees of the ILS who are all geared up to run, bike, swim and struggle in a battle of endurance and wits in a series of physical and mental challenges set at the country’s first National Conference on Climate Change Adaptation.

Renewable Energy: caring for the environment, creating green jobs

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) together with the Climate Change Commission and the National Youth Commission, pushed for the creation of “green jobs” to help increase employment opportunities while helping the country achieve sustainability.

During the “1st Philippine Green Jobs Conference” held at the SMX Convention Center last week, DOLE defined green jobs as jobs that reduce environmental impact, contribute to climate change solutions and result not only in environmental but also in economic and social benefits to the community and to the workers.

Green Jobs: Giving greener choices for young jobseekers

Young jobseekers are most likely to opt for a green job.  This was the consensus of youth delegates to the 1st Philippine Green Jobs Conference held at the SMX Convention Center in mid-August.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) together with the Climate Change Commission (CCC) and the National Youth Commission (NYC) pushed for the creation of “green jobs” to cultivate brighter careers for the GREENeration, which is short for the green generation—a common reference to today’s youth.

A Transparency Initiative

“On its first year of implementation, we want to be transparent with our tripartite partners and the public in general, in what the Department and its social partners have accomplished on promoting decent and productive work,” said Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz.

The report outlines progress initiated in the four pillars of decent work.  Overall, the report shows 87.2%, with 184 commitments have had significant progress out of the total 211.

‘YOUTHink’ sessions to tackle migration and youth development

With Filipino youth as the largest among all age groups in the labor force, it’s no longer surprising that many of them take their chances at landing jobs abroad.

In 2008, 50 percent of the 2.7 million unemployed were youth. They account for 35 percent of the OFW population. Youth, aged 15-24 comprise 20 percent of the population. The Philippines has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world.

Cultural heritage tourism jobs yesterday took center stage as the Department of Labor and Employment’s Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) held a forum on cultural heritage tourism at the Ortigas Foundation Library in Pasig City.

With the theme, “It’s more Fun in the Philippines: Potentials of  Cultural Heritage as a Driver for Economic Opportunities and Employment Generation,” the forum was a collaboration between the Ortigas Foundation and the ILS, which is the policy research and advocacy arm of the DOLE.
