The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) employees not only conduct researches that help make “the grass greener” for the Philippine labor and employment sector, they also literally make the country greener by planting trees in disaster-prone areas.

In July 2014, ILS employees planted two hundred (200) Talisay seedlings in MacArthur Landing Park in Brgy. Baras, Palo, Leyte. In its March 2016 on-site visit of the tree planting project. ILS employees Benita Cortez and Marc Raphael Peñarondo found out that about ninety percent (90%) of the planted seedlings have grown normally. This was confirmed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office – Leyte (DENR PENRO-Leyte).

The results of the January 2016 Labor Force Survey (LFS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) indicated that decent work gains have been achieved particularly in terms of generating quality employment. Employment expanded by 2.0% (+752,000), year-on-year, accompanied by a decline in both the unemployment rate (5.8% from 6.6%) and part-time employment by 12.8% (12.506 million from 14.335 million). Further, vulnerable employment rate went down considerably to 33.4% from 39.4%. In contrast, underemployment rate notably went up to 19.7% from 17.9%, year-on-year.

The proportion of unemployed men was higher (63.2%) than unemployed women (36.8%). However, improvement in the unemployment rate for men (5.9% from 6.4%) was noted compared to the unemployment rate of women, which remained unchanged (5.3% from 5.3%).

The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) organized the “Introduction to Impact Evaluation: A Training Workshop for the DOLE Inter-Agency on Research and Statistical Matters (DOLE IAC-RSM)” held at Richmond Hotel in Pasig City on 10 December 2015.

The workshop was facilitated by the Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the world’s poor through research and technical assistance.

For 2015, ILS was able to produce 14 researches along the areas of Labor Market Analysis, Program Assessment, and Policy Research. The said papers were presented during the 4^th Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Research Conference held in Bayview Hotel on December 2-3, 2015.

As part of its moral renewal program, the Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) headed by OIC-Executive Director Mary Grace L. Riguer participated in a feeding program last December 07, 2015 at Hospicio de San José, Manila.

The ILS staff, assisted by Hospicio’s social workers actively and patiently took the time to feed and spend time with persons with special needs (PSN). Scheduled as lunch, the feeding took place in the Hospicio’s playground area. The last time ILS conducted a feeding program in the institution was in December 2013.

The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) hosted the Department of Labor and Employment’s Flag raising ceremony held at the Local Governance Learning Center (LGLC) last December 21, 2015.

The ceremony was attended by key officials from the department headed by Assistant Secretary (Asec) Ma. Gloria Tango, OIC Director Liwayway Y. Ilo of the Human Resources Department and Services (HRDS), OIC-Executive Director Mary Grace L. Riguer, and OIC- Deputy Executive Director Atty. Stephanie Tabladillo of the ILS.

World Bank’s Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD) Thematic Working Group (TWG) on low-skilled labor migration and the International Labour Organization (ILO) jointly sponsored the “KNOMAD Workshop on Measuring Migration Costs for the Low-skilled” in Washington, D.C. from November 16-17, 2015.

The Institute for Labor Studies (ILS) completed its preparatory activities for third-party audit in preparation for its ISO 9001:2008 certification.

The ILS audit program of 19 enrolled process areas started in October 26, 2015 with a Quality Management System (QMS) Internal Audit determining the Institute’s conformance to the requirements of ISO 9001:2008. This was followed by pre-certification assessment facilitated by auditors from Rosehall Management Consultants. The ILS pre-certification findings provided guidance for management and staff to further review its processes and address non-compliance findings.
